Don't Forget to Pack These Healthy Items Before Your Vacation

Source: Don't forget to Pack These Healthy Items Before Your Vacation

Summer travels are almost here, and that means packing up your sandals and your beach bag and traveling. But there are many vacation prep to-dos before you can say bon voyage, and it's not all about booking hotel rooms and buying plane tickets. As usual, your health should be a top priority no matter if you're at home or traveling the world, so taking care to prepare before your trip will make it easy to stay healthy and fit. Don't forget to take these items with you before you board the plane!

  • Over-the-counter medication. Sometimes minor cuts, sore muscles, or colds happen, so these are always good to have on hand in case you need them. They are also important if you are traveling overseas to an unfamiliar country— you don't want to have to decipher a foreign language when you're trying to find the right medicine to take care of a headache.
  • Exercise equipment. There's nothing worse then wanting to go for a run or a dip in the hotel pool and realizing you didn't bring the right gear for your time away from home. Pack a few things before you leave so you can quickly work out without hunting for replacements once you arrive. Exercise equipment doesn't have to take up too much space in your suitcase — throw in some lightweight shoes, a jump rope, or other compact items and you've got your workouts covered.
  • Healthy snacks. Seeing the sights and learning about different cultures can equal lots of time spent on a plane or in the airport. Pack a few healthy snacks in your carry-on so you can snack happy while waiting for your plane. Travel-friendly items like trail mix and fruit can help cut hunger before you reach for a salty or carb-filled snack, and being prepared when you're on a restricted diet helps ensure you won't go hungry. Also, some airlines have healthier options available while in flight, so make sure you read all ingredients in order to make a healthy choice — check out our guide to see how different airplane meal options compare.
  • Sunscreen. Even if you're not going to a tropical paradise, you'll probably be spending a lot of time sight-seeing. Remember to protect your skin with at least an SPF 15 sunscreen, even on cloudy or overcast days. Packing sunscreen before you go means you don't have to search for your favorite brand once there or pay for an overpriced tube at the hotel's gift shop.
  • Emergency and insurance information. Before you leave, don't forget to make sure your insurance covers you for any international travel (and buy supplemental insurance if not). Make a copy of all the important information filed away at home so you have everything you need with you in case of an emergency; you'll be glad you have phone numbers and policy information close at hand so you can make the best decisions.

How to hula hoop

In that dreamy place where my backside always looks luscious and my post-baby boobs are perky and all the stacks of random paperwork are not covering my kitchen counter and I really do love listening to hour after hour of NPR, I am also a phenomenal hula hooper.

In the real world, none of these things come naturally to me, including the gift of sending a plastic tube around and around my hips. It seems worth learning, though, and not just because it is fantastic exercise.Imagine how much more productive conference calls could be if you were secretly hula hooping in your office, or how superior you'd feel if you could keep one up longer than your barely walking child. Amazing, right?

To get there -- or at least a tiny step closer to my dream world -- I'll be watching this nice lady in the pink pants explain how to find the right hula hooping motion. She makes it seem pretty easy but I'm pretty sure I will be watching it at least 400 times before I buy that.

Do you hula hoop? What's your trick for keeping it up and going?

Census shows fewer girls being born in India due to sex-selective abortion

India's 2011 Census reveals a serious problem: a big decline in the number of girls younger than 7 years old, a sign that the practice of aborting female fetuses may be on the rise.

According to a report by the BBC, activists think that as many as 8 million female fetuses were aborted over the last 10 years. The only country where the numbers are worse, researchers say, is China, where a "one-child" policy plus a preference for male children has resulted in 250 million fewer births since 1979 and led to a marriage crisis, with 24 million more males than females by 2010, an imbalance attributed to sex-selective abortion.

The BBC talked to Rekha, the mother of a 3-year-old daughter who lives in the lower middle-class Sagarpur neighborhood in Delhi. Last September, when an ultrasound showed that she was pregnant with twin girls, her mother-in-law forced her to have an abortion.

"I said there's no difference between girls and boys. But here they think differently," she told the BBC in an interview. "There's no happiness when a girl is born. They say the son will carry forward our lineage, but the daughter will get married and go off to another family."

It's the opposite of the pro-choice vs. pro-life debate in the United States. In India, as in China, being pro-choice means being able to decide to have your baby rather than endure a forced abortion.

Though sex-selective abortions have been illegal in India since 1994—and pre-conception sex-selection was outlawed in 2004—enforcement is lax. In Delhi, the census shows that there are just 866 girls for every 1,000 boys under age 7. Nationwide, there are 914 girls for every 1,000 boys; in 1961, before ultrasounds were readily available, there were 976 girls for every 1,000 boys nationwide.

"What is needed is a strict implementation of the law," Varsha Joshi, director of census operations for Delhi, told the BBC's Geeta Pandey. "I find there's absolutely no will on the part of the government to stop this."

Shopping for sunscreen? The Environmental Working Group's (EWG) newly released 2011 sunscreen guide can help you make smart decisions.

This research and advocacy group recommends a mere 20 percent of the 600-plus beach and sport sunscreens it evaluated. To score high marks in the rankings, a product must be effective -- adequately protect skin from both UVA (which causes premature aging, skin cancer, and other skin damage) and UVB (which causes sunburn) rays. It must also be safe, meaning free of potentially harmful chemicals.

The 2011 products to avoid list contains some popular brands.

EWG's Sunscreens to Avoid:

How did EWG come up with this list? Each of the products to avoid meets all of these criteria:

  • SPF values above 50-plus. Higher SPF products are not necessarily best. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration says these numbers can be misleading. There's a concern that high SPF products may give people a false sense of security and encourage people to stay out in the sun for too long without reapplying sunscreen. It's also important to note that the SPF is based solely on UVB protection.
  • Sunscreen sprays. They can fill the air with tiny particles that may not be safe to breathe in, according to EWG.
  • Contains oxybenzone and vitamin A. Oxybenzone is a concern because it penetrates the skin, is associated with allergic reactions, and is a potential hormone disruptor. Retinyl palmitate is a form of vitamin A that may not be safe when exposed to sunlight. EWG recommends choosing products with one of these ingredients instead: zinc, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, or Mexoryl SX.

Which products does EWG recommend? Here's a list of its best beach and sport sunscreens.

Unfortunately, some of the safest and most effective sunscreens on store shelves can be expensive so it's worthwhile to shop around for deals. Here are the most affordable products that performed well in EWG's ratings (calculated by Yahoo! based on price per ounce).

Safer, Affordable Sunscreens:

EWG also includes ratings for best moisturizerslip balms, and makeup with SPF.

It's worth noting that using sunscreen is only one part of smart sun protection. Limit your time outside in the middle of the day when the sun's rays are most intense. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing(dark and tightly-woven). Get more sun safety tips from EWG.

6 Ways to Skinny Up Your Burger

by Jessica Smith, REDBOOK

Let's hear it for hamburgers! May 28th is National Hamburger Day, and with Memorial Day Weekend coming up, we thought we'd share some tips on how to better your burger - just in case you are gearing up for a cookout this weekend.

And while you may not think of a burger as a health food, it's actually a pretty decent choice when it comes to getting in a satisfying protein-filled meal. But there are definitely a few changes you can make to your healthy up your hamburger, without sacrificing taste.

Try these simple tweaks to get more delicious nutrition out of every bite:

1. At the supermarket, look for a label that says "lean beef" and opt for the lowest percentage of fat (95% lean). Go organic and grass-fed whenever possible.

2. Don't be fooled by turkey burgers. They can often be as fatty as their beef counterparts. If you go for turkey, choose the 80 percent lean variety. Can't tell if it's lean or not? Choose the lean beef option – chances are it's got less fat.

3. Keep your buns dry. Adding mayo or butter to your bun can add unnecessary fat and calories. Opt for light mayo, or add flavor with low fat options like mustard, ketchup and pickles.

4. Sprinkle in some vitamins. Prep your patties with add-ins like chopped onions, celery, apples or even some cooked spinach for a nutrient rich and flavor-filled burger.

5. Juice it up! Lean beef can often be drier because of it's low fat content, so keep it juicy by mixing 1 cup of yogurt and ¾ cup of bread crumbs per pound of lean beef. The yogurt's lactic acid tenderizes the meat, and the breadcrumbs hold in the moisture, so your lean burger stays juicy.

6. Wrap it with whole grains. Skip the white bread (i.e. processed sugar) bun and opt for a high fiber (over 3g) whole grain one instead. We love Rudy's Organic 100% Whole Wheat Buns(available at Whole Foods).

Your best bet to keep it healthy and weight watching friendly is to make it at home, so you know exactly what is going into your food. Try some of these yummy burger recipes.

Summer Slim Down: Easy Ways to Lose Weight Without Joining a Program

You don't need to spend money to belong to a diet program to see the same results. Just try following these helpful tips...
-Melanie Kozlan, BettyConfidential.com

Diet programs like Weight Watchers are a strange paradox: the people who are able to use them successfully are completely committed to losing weight, sticking to their diet, and not wasting money. Yet, those who fail are stuck feeling twice as bad since they've now wasted money on a calorie-counting system and discipline they didn't follow, and one that didn't stop them from gaining weight.

In reality, if you are the kind of person who is serious about losing weight and sticking to your diet, there is no need to join a diet program. Here are some of the easiest ways to slim down without compromising your health (or wallet):

Read 5 Easy Ways to Banish Cellulite

1. Write Down Everything You Eat
It may sound obsessive and annoying, but writing down everything you eat is a huge component of diet programs.

Why it Works: This is a great way to analyze what you're eating and see what food groups you're missing. It will also prevent you from binge eating or indulging in junk food as you become more disciplined and don't want to write anything embarrassing on your list. You can count calories if you really want to, but most people are well aware of the nutrition quality of what they're eating, especially once they see it in the context of a list.

Take it Further:  If you would prefer to count calories, Nutritiondata.com is a free site that lets you track what you eat, offers a free nutrition analysis, and logs your water intake and deducts calories burned from exercise. Basically, if you want to join a diet program like Weight Watchers, this is the site that lets you do it for free.

2. Use the Buddy System
Have a friend you can compete with or lean on to stay motivated do it with you. You can encourage each other and build off of each other's energy.

Why it Works: Cravings often only last a few minutes, so if you can direct your attention to texting your friend instead of indulging in a hot fudge Sunday, you will probably forget how badly you want it by the time she texts you back. Encouragement helps enforce a positive association with your new, healthy lifestyle, and gives you an extra push since you won't want to let down your friend.

Take it further: Start a blog to track your weight loss. You'll encourage others and will feel obliged to stay on the right track. If you do choose to start a diet blog, make sure it's on a website similar to Nutrition Data and not in the form of public Facebook rants about how hungry you are. The goal is to attract positive feedback, not to drive your friends crazy.

3. Create Rituals
Decide you're going to drink two glasses of water before everything you eat, or that you're going to do 20 squats every time you go to the bathroom. Be creative and do something that will actively help you reach your health and fitness goals.

Why it Works: Repeatedly doing something like this is a great way to create a healthy habit. You may not be able to stick to your diet, but you will find yourself automatically taking the stairs two at a time, or drinking more water than you ever thought you could.

Take it further: Try something new each week. It will keep you from getting bored of your routine and you'll stay focused on creating healthy habits.

Autism and ADHD On the Rise

By Shira Scott, GalTime.com

One out of every six children in the United States is now diagnosed with a developmental or learning disability, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Researchers looked at National Health Interview Surveys taken from 1997-1999 and from 2006-2008. The surveys asked parents if their children (ages 3-17) had been diagnosed with ADHD, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, autism, seizures, stuttering or stammering, moderate to profound hearing loss, blindness, learning disorders and/or other developmental delays.

In 1997-1999, about 12.8 percent of children had a developmental or learning disability. By 2006-2008 that number had risen to 15% with early 10 million kids diagnosed with one of the conditions, according to their parents.

Related: Measles on the Rise Again

Experts say rising rates of autism and ADHD continue to drive the numbers higher.

About 7.6 percent of children were diagnosed with ADHD according to data from the 2006-2008 surveys.  That's up from 5.7 percent from 1997-1999.  About 0.74 percent were diagnosed wtih autism in 2006-2008 reports, up from 0.19 percent in 1997-1999.

According to researchers and other experts, the rise may be the result of greater awareness by parents, teachers and doctors.  While past research has suggested a possible link to advanced parental age and/or fertility interventions, researchers say more study needs to be done in those areas.

Christina Hendricks confesses her big breast secret

Christina Hendricks is the only celebrity I've ever heard grown women squeal over. Bring her up in conversation, and suddenly it's, "OMG, I LOVE HER!!! She's gorgeous. Amazing. Ahhhhhh!" Not even Angelina Jolie gets that kind of reaction most of the time.

More from The Stir: Would You Get Breast Implants for a Guy?

You know why? Because on the spectrum of realistic Hollywood body types, she's a bit closer to us. So, we think we could realistically look like Christina Hendricks. Why? Well, it may take a push-up bra or implants to get her breasts, but other than that, she looks like she eats. (Thank God. Because we sure do eat!)

We may wonder if her bust itself is real or fake ... but Hendricks seems to have had enough of that question.

She recently set the record straight with The Daily Mail:

It's so bizarre that people are constantly asking if my breasts are real or fake. They're so obviously real that anyone who's ever seen or touched a breast would know.

As bizarre as it is to her to have people wondering whether she got them under the knife, it's evenmore bizarre for most of us to contemplate a woman naturally having those breasts on a tall, slender frame. She has a rockin' body, which she clearly owns (and that's awesome!), but it's anything but average.

More from The Stir: Padded Bras for 4-Year-Olds

When faced with the news that there's been a sharp rise in breast augmentation, because women want that enviable cup-that-runneth-over, Hendricks said:

I hope I'm not encouraging that. If there's anything to be learned from me it's that I'm learning to celebrate what I was born with, even though it's sometimes been inconvenient. Having larger breasts has made it harder for me to shop throughout the years, but I've learnt to love it.

Sadly, it seems, the beauty of Hendricks -- a woman who has learned to celebrate what she was born with -- gets lost on women who run to their plastic surgeons for breast augmentations.

Also, it's about damn time someone tell the truth about big breasts! Her breasts may be enviable, aspirational, whatever -- but they're not all they're cracked up to be! Large breasts can lead to all kinds of issues -- like, Christina explains, making it harder to fit into clothes you love or triggering back pain or other body aches. There's no doubt having them can take a physical and emotional toll. I'll bet even Christina has at one point considered a breast reduction. I have friends who have actually gone through with that surgery, because their "girls" (while delightful to men) were a pain in the bust!

More from The StirWalgreens Pap Smear? Oh H8&# Yes!

The lesson here couldn't be any clearer: Instead of running around girl-crushing it out on Hendricks, because we wish we could look like her, we should love her for other reasons. Like her candor, her grace, charm, poise, and honest, healthy body image. Because we're all just as beautiful -- big breasts or not.

Do you agree with what Christina says about the inconvenience of larger breasts?

5 Ways Oprah Inspired Women to Be Healthier

Amy Paturel, SELF magazine

For a quarter of a century, Oprah Winfrey has been teaching us to live our best lives. And while she has almost nothing in common with most of her viewers (she's a billionaire with a private jet and mansions all over the country where she hangs with Hollywood's A-list), she makes all of us feel like we're her best gal pal ... next to Gayle, that is.

In spite of the fame and fortune, Oprah's an Everywoman who struggles to control her weight and balance her work and personal life -- just like us!

Her goal hasn't been to entertain us -- although she does every time she welcomes guests in that quintessential Tarzan-esque shout) -- it has been to share her own "a-ha moment" discoveries like we're catching up over coffee.

Related: Moves from The Biggest Loser's Top Trainer

She has empowered us to drop unwanted pounds, look and feel younger, get our hormones under control and achieve spiritual peace. Now, as her final season comes to a close, we reflect on our five favorite ways Oprah inspired women to be healthier -- physically, emotionally and spiritually.

1.    She got us reading. With approximately 2 million online members since June 2003, Oprah's Book Club has quickly become the largest book club in the world. Free enrollment provides members with access to specialized reading guides for each book selection and Q&A sessions with literary experts like Maya Angelou.

"Books open windows to the world for all of us," says Oprah. And her endorsement opens doors for selected authors. If she even mentions the title of a book, it instantly skyrockets to No. 1 on the bestseller lists. What's more, Oprah's "Angel Network" has made books available to under-resourced children all over the world.

2.    She got us writing. In addition to writing about our blessings -- what Oprah dubs a "gratitude journal" -- Oprah reminded us that our thoughts create our realities. She encouraged us to dream big, and put those dreams down on paper. She taught us to journal about our hardships and how to overcome them, and in the process, reveal our own best selves. At the top of her gratitude list: her friendship with Gayle King. Her many shows focused on their hilarious adventures reminded all of us about the importance of our own friendships.

3.    She got us talking about previously taboo issues. Oprah doesn't shy away from difficult or uncomfortable topics. She devoted full-hour shows to sexual abuse (affecting both men and women), menopause and ill-fitting bras (Be honest! How many of us discovered we were supporting our girls with the wrong bra thanks to that show?). And with her resident health expert, Dr. Oz, dishing about everything from how to prevent a stroke to what makes a good poop (S-shaped with a dramatic entry into the water like a diver from Acapulco), Oprah encouraged all of us to take charge of our own health -- and not to feel guilty about peeking in the toilet.

4.    She showed us -- repeatedly -- that losing weight demands a lifestyle change, not a fad diet or a quick fix. With the help of trainer and fitness expert, Bob Greene, she has helped viewers understand that the only surefire way to achieve weight-loss success is to eat fewer calories than you burn. That means loading up on nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods and hitting the gym (or the track) regularly.

5.    She taught us what forgiveness really means.
Through shows with people like William Petit Jr. (the prominent East Coast physician who lost his wife, two daughters and his house in a home invasion/robbery) and Jacqui Subarido, who helped us shift our thinking about what it means to be beautiful, Oprah taught us that forgiveness isn't about condoning or ignoring bad behavior. No! It's about "letting go of the hope that the past could have been any different." What's more, forgiveness is not something we do to make amends with the person who wronged us. It's something we do for ourselves.

While Oprah is leaving daytime TV, many of our favorite Oprah-isms will continue to play over and over in our minds:

-    "When you know better you do better."
-    "When a man shows you who he is, believe him."
-    "Turn your wounds into wisdom."
-    "Surround yourself only with people who are going to take you higher."
-    "When you undervalue what you do, the world will undervalue who you are"

How to Detox from Caffeine

Ready to kick caffeine to the curb, or at least eliminate one of your 3 necessary espressos? Here are a few tips to get you started.

  • Start on a low-impact day. Pick a day when you're not working or super busy so you can take it easy and nap if necessary.
  • Reduce your caffeine intake over a few days. Cut it in half each day and don't have any after 2:00 p.m.
  • If you can't part ways completely, replace your morning coffee with green tea—it's low in caffeine and high in antioxidants.
  • Love a Coke? Make your own refreshing spritzer with club soda, fresh squeeze of lemon of lime (for detox) and a splash of pure fruit juice.
  • Try B vitamins or foods with B vitamins like chickpeas, spinach, and whole grain cereal. They'll give you the energy that you used to get from caffeine.
  • Rooibos tea - It's caffeine-free and relieves nervous tension associated with caffeine withdrawal.
  • Smoothie with psyllium – for cleansing and regularity.
  • Action Plan: Beware of hidden caffeine in energy drinks and goods such as ice cream and chocolate. Start looking for other ways to boost your energy, like exercise!
  • Drink lots of water. It'll flush your system and reduce headaches and constipation.
