How to Fold an American Flag

Saturday, August 27, 2011

On commemorative holidays, the U.S. Armed forces often hold a flag folding ceremony as a way of honoring our country and those who have served it. During the event, veterans or ranking officers fashion the American flag into the triangular shape of an old military uniform hat, each fold representing something subjective, like soldiers from one specific war or life, in general. The end result is an expertly tucked flag that symbolizes patriotism and respect. Learn the coveted technique below.

1. Fold your flag in half lengthwise (out of respect, avoid placing it on the ground or any other surface).

2. Fold it lengthwise a second time, making sure the stars on the blue field (a.k.a. the "union") remain outward.

3. Make a small triangular fold by bringing the bottom right corner up to meet the top edge.

4. Fold the triangle toward the blue union along its innermost edge, creating a second triangle.

5. Continue folding triangles until only the blue shows. Tuck left corner into the fold of the finished triangle. The finished flag should resemble a cocked three-corner hat in honor of the U.S. Armed Forces.
